Rice Bran Oil Tocotrienols Can Slow Down Ageing

Tocotrienols are also coming under the class of vitamin E. They are as good as tocopherols, the traditional form of vitamin E. Both these forms possess antioxidant properties. While both these groups offer health benefits, the tocotrienols are believed to be better. Tocotrienols are obtainable from vegetable oils like rice bran oil and are capable of retarding ageing.

Abdominal fat is unhealthy. When the calories that go into our body exceed the calories expended, the situation is ideal for calorie retention in the body, usually in the form of fat. Fat can be deposited just about anywhere in the body, but the preferred place is the abdominal area. Why is this place chosen for storing excess fat? This is because this method of storing fat is efficient and the least amount of energy is spent in carrying it around.

Visceral Fat and Fatty Liver

Fat which is stored in the belly area is called visceral fat and is different from subcutaneous fat which is stored just under the skin. The latter is relatively harmless while the former is known to wrap itself around the internal organs including the liver. Visceral fat is dangerous and when it builds up in the body, the risk for several diseases is increased. When fat builds up in the liver and around the liver, this condition is called nonalcoholic fatty liver to distinguish it from the alcoholic fatty liver produced as a result of chronic alcoholism. Nonalcoholic fatty liver increases the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Tocotrienols Possess Vitamin E Activity

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin. However, vitamin E is more famous for another role. It is a powerful antioxidant. As an antioxidant, it is capable of removing the harmful free radicals which are being continuously produced in the body. Vitamin E can exist in two forms-tocopherols and tocotrienols. The only difference between tocopherols and tocotrienols is the presence of three double bonds in the side chain of tocotrienols. Both these forms possess antioxidant properties, but the latter form offers significantly higher health benefits. There are 4 different tocotrienols-alpha, beta, gamma and delta.

Rice Bran Oil Supplies Tocotrienols

Rice bran oil is a very good source of tocotrienols. Tocotrienols are also present in coconut oil, palm oil, barley and wheat germ. Several research papers have appeared on the health benefits of tocotrienols. Tocotrienols are believed to counter a number of diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Experiments on animals have suggested that tocotrienols can also prevent the onset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This also reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease. It is the presence of diseases which leads to accelerated ageing. It also reduces the life span of an individual.

Tocotrienols Slow Down Ageing

Tocotrienols can also counter ageing in other ways as well. Telomeres are short nucleotide sequences present at the ends of the chromosomes and act as chromosomal caps, protecting the chromosomes from being damaged. As one ages, the telomeres become shorter in length, increasing the risk for chromosomal damage. In fact, it has even been suggested that measurement of the telomere length is a good indicator of the biological age of an individual. Research has indicated that the shortening of the telomeres can be slowed down by tocotrienols.

Neuroprotective Role

Fibroblasts are cells which keep the connective tissue in a healthy state. As one ages, the fibroblasts also age, leading to the deterioration of the connective tissue. Tocotrienols have been shown to exert a negative influence on the rate of ageing of the fibroblasts. The brain has the ability to concentrate tocotrienols. Alzheimer’s disease, a classical disease of ageing, is prevented by the consumption of tocotrienols. The anti ageing effect seen in the brain is mainly due to the antioxidant property of tocotrienols. In addition, these compounds are also capable of retarding the age related decline in the proliferation of the immune cells.

Thus, it is clear that the role of tocotrienols goes beyond its function as a vitamin and the use of vegetable oil like the rice bran oil can slow down ageing and prevent the onset of several diseases.
