Montana Memory Care Communities

Memory care is a specialized form of senior care for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's or similar memory deficiency. With the Baby Boomer generation reaching retirement age, these assisted living facilities are going to become increasingly important. There are many reasons why Montana memory care communities are an ideal location for individuals who have been diagnosed with this particular condition to spend their retirement years. The Treasure State has the most awesome scenery and outdoor activities and the cost of living, and memory care, are lower than practically anywhere else in the country.

Older adults diagnosed with Alzheimer's or other form of dementia have unique needs in terms of senior care. Montana memory care is able to meet these special needs. Memory care facilities offer 24-hour supervision, help with activities of daily living and basic medical care. There are a multitude of reasons why Montana is an enviable place to enjoy retirement.

Overview of Montana Memory Care

Montana is named the Treasure State for its breathtaking natural resources in the form of Rocky Mountain ranges, crystal clear lakes and magnificent national parks. Many seniors with memory loss are otherwise fit, well and able to take full advantage of the hiking, fishing and skiing opportunities that the state has to offer. This, plus its low cost of living and no sales tax make it an ideal retirement location. In addition, monthly costs for senior care are lower than in most other states in the country. The state government's Department of Public Health and Human Services sets strict standards  for all types of assisted living facilities. Many of the memory care communities in Montana are easily accessible via I-90 or I-15.

Montana Memory Care Defined

Two of the main concerns when caring for seniors who have Alzheimer's or other memory deficit are safety and security. For example, it is not unusual for someone with memory problems to forget to turn off the gas, leave one or more cigarettes burning or to wander off at any time of the day or night. There is also a greater risk of falling among this population of aging adults. Work is under way at the University of Montana in Missoula to try and quantify this risk.

For these, 24-hour staffing is vitally important. Support services, medical care and personal assistance are available.  Montana memory care incorporates a full-time Activity Director who arranges and supervises outings and social events. Memory care is different from other forms of senior care. Independent living residences, for example, are for seniors who do not require personal assistance or round-the-clock supervision. Nursing homes are tailored for seniors with serious or debilitating medical issues and are unable to care for themselves. Care homes are for seniors who neither need nor want 24-hour access to medical care.

A typical Montana memory care center offers a tailored program through which each senior can find success and enrichment. Residents live in private apartments furnished with kitchen facilities and climate control. Amenities might an outdoor patio and gardens, computer/Internet access, emergency call system, on-site beauty and barber shop, library and walking trails. Residents may expect services such as medication management, housekeeping, transportation and help with activities of daily living. A full-time activity director oversees classes and community socials.
